Bollywood is a force for good in India, gently softening the values of a conservative nation.

The financial size of the Indian film industry is $2.5 billion, puny compared to America’s $40 billion. But Bollywood doubles in size every five years and its cultural influence is greater than its numbers.

Ticket sales in Bollywood represent only 0.7 percent of the world’s entertainment business. In 2011 this will become 1.3 percent, according to a report by the Confederation of Indian Industry and AT Kearney. The Indian animation industry did $285 million dollars in business last year. It’s growing at 35 percent. The gaming industry is growing at 70 percent and will be $300 million next year.

Four things are accelerating the size and power of Bollywood. The addition of hundreds of cinema screens across India every year, especially in malls and multiplexes (India has only 12 screens per million people compared with the USA’s 117); the improvement in the quality of cinema halls which has encouraged middle-class families to leave home; the rise in the price of tickets, which are rarely less than Rs100; and a growing global appetite for Bollywood that’s not just from South Asians.

The content of Bollywood’s movies has also changed. Through the 90s, Bollywood split into two. One part still addresses the old audience, which wants to cheer angry heroes who bash, slash and shoot their way about while avenging their raped sisters and slaughtered brothers.

Dharmendra and Mithun Chakraborty still make films that service this audience –rural North India – that cherishes honour. Even if everyone in the movie dies, it’s OK as long as the hero’s honour is intact. These are films cheaply made and not released in multiplexes. As Bollywood eases out of this category, it is being taken up by regional cinema, such as Bhojpuri.

The other, call it modern, stream of movies is what is now dominant in Bollywood, and it comes from the biggest production houses of Bombay, like Yash Raj Films of Yash Chopra and Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.

This kind of film has a hero who is less violent, more thoughtful and unlikely to sacrifice his family for his honour. It might even have a hero who plays a homosexual (Dostana – out next month), illegal in India, or sympathise with a wife who has strayed (Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, 2006). A debate in India is currently on between Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, who wants to make homosexuality legal, and Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who wants it to remain a crime. Patil might represent the majority view, but Bollywood sides with Ramadoss. If not now, very soon, Bollywood will prevail: it always does. Only one city could have produced Bollywood and that is Bombay: not Delhi, not Lahore, not Karachi.

Bombay does not speak Hindustani naturally – or even well. But three centuries of trading have gifted it a liberal, pragmatic culture that no other city in South Asia can have. This has opened up the space for Bollywood to be creative and challenge the consensus. The dominant communities of Bollywood are two: Punjabis and Urdu-speaking Muslims from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, inheritors of our Indo-Persian culture.

The Kapoor clan of Peshawar and Lyallpur, Prithviraj and three generations after him, is the first family of cinema, active for 80 years. Decade after decade, the family produces great actors in an unbroken chain: Prithviraj, Raj, Shammi, Shashi, Rishi, Randhir, Karisma, Kareena and Ranbir. No other family of actors anywhere in the world can match the Kapoors of Bollywood.

But Bollywood is not entirely about lineage. The biggest star in cinema is the King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan.

Shah Rukh Khan came to Mumbai from Delhi in 1988 at the age of 22 with nothing in his pockets, like the Baazigar he was to play in 1994. Twenty years on, he has made himself the most powerful man in entertainment, genuine Bollywood nobility – the Gandhis dine at his mansion, Mannat, when in Bombay.

He gets mobbed across the world. His company produces movies, runs an animation studio and owns the cricket team that employs Shoaib Akhtar.

His taxed income last year was a billion rupees. He paid income tax of over Rs300 million for 2006-2007.

India’s best film critic, Mayank Shekhar, says Bollywood movies “are not about filmmaking.” People go to the cinema, he says, to watch their favourite movie star “act like himself.”

People go to a Shah Rukh Khan film to see Shah Rukh Khan, not the character he’s playing. The only exception in Bollywood, says Shekhar, is Aamir Khan, who builds a character personality for different roles. What makes a star is whether the audience likes and admires the qualities the star represents: Shah Rukh Khan is the biggest star in Bollywood because he can best represent Indians.

Pakistanis who are irritated by why the character of the hero in the Bollywood movie is Hindu and the heroine Muslim have it backwards – the audience would rather see Salman Khan play Salman Khan and not Sandeep Kapoor.

Fifty years ago, Muslim actors thought they had to change their names to be accepted. Yusuf Khan of Peshawar became Dilip Kumar and Mahjabeen Bano became Meena Kumari. Today, it could be said that a Muslim was more likely to succeed in Bollywood. But that is wrong.

The stars of cinema are popular through merit alone. Entertainment is the most meritocratic profession of all: every ticket is a vote of approval.

Three nations have a star system, and they are the only three nations that have a movie industry: Hollywood, Bollywood and Hong Kong. Seven stars dominate Bollywood, and their presence in a movie will guarantee it funding, publicity and distribution. The seven are:Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Hrithik Roshan.

In output, Bollywood is king. India made 1,041 movies in 2005, compared to the United States’ 699 and all of Europe (937).

Along with lots of rubbish, Bollywood has the ability to produce work of quality that is yet popular. An example is the poetry of Sampooran Singh Kalra of Jhelum, famous as Gulzar.

Lines woven casually into a fun song (called “Chhainya Chhainya!”) that many more have heard than have Iqbal’s Shikwa or Faiz’s Subh-e-Azaadi – and just as good. Partition was a disaster for Pakistan’s actors, singers, directors and writers (except for one) because only Bombay gave them the freedom and the money their talents deserved.

Everything is celebrated by Bollywood: Eid, Ganesh Chaturthi (Sholay’s writer Salim Khan and his actor sons – Salman, Sohail and Arbaaz – keep an idol at home), Navratri, Christmas.

When Muslim actors die in Bollywood, it is common to see their janaaza being shouldered equally or even entirely by Hindus with covered heads, reciting the Kalma in conviction.

Hindus have ceased to be Hindus and Muslims have ceased to be Muslims in Bollywood. Bollywood is better than India – but it is what India will become: Bollywood always prevails.

Relatives of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian from Bhikiwind town near Amritsar who is on a death row in Pakistan, on Thursday sought the intervention of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan for his release.

Buoyed after the release of Kashmir Singh, who was released on Wednesday after 35 years in Pakistani jails, the family of Sarabjit hoped he too would be let off soon, but it reduced to tears again after reports from Pakistan said that Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf had rejected his mercy petition.

“This is shocking. Our hopes of getting him back had increased after Kashmir Singh’s release but now we are disappointed. The Indian government should intervene. My brother Sarabjit is completely innocent and crossed in Pakistan inadvertently,” Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur said in Amritsar.

She said that she was trying to get in touch with Shah Rukh Khan as he had shown interest recently in the campaign to get Sarabjit released.

“We are trying to get his address and number to contact him. His popularity in the sub-continent may help secure Sarabjit’s release. We have high hopes from him,” said Sarabjit’s daughter Swapandeep.

Kaur, who has been running a campaign for the last few years to get Sarabjit released, is heading for Delhi to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other top leaders to seek their intervention to get Sarabjit released.

The family has been camping in Amritsar since Wednesday when Kashmir Singh was released at the Attari-Wagah border, 30 kms from here.

Sarabjit, who is known as Manjit Singh in Pakistan, is said to have inadvertently crossed into Pakistan 17 years ago. He was arrested there and labelled as an Indian spy. Later, he was charged of bombings and terrorist activities in that country and sentenced to death.

Pakistani officials announced on Sunday. Pakistan’s Supreme Court had rejected his appeal for clemency and President Musharraf also rejected his mercy petition this month.

Singh’s lawyer Abdul Hameed Rana said that Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf could still pardon his client, “but India also needs to reciprocate the move and release all such Pakistani prisoners.”Sarabjit Singh has been in jail in Pakistan since 1990. “His death warrants have been issued and we have received them. He will be executed /hangedon April 1,” deputy chief of Lahore’s high-security Kot Lakhpat prison Shabbar Khan said.

Singh’s lawyer Abdul Hameed Rana said that Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf could still pardon his client, “but India also needs to reciprocate the move and release all such Pakistani prisoners.”

Sarabjit is being seen as the first victim of the Kashmir Singh revelation that he was indeed a spy. At the time of Kashmir’s release earlier this month, Human Rights Minister Ansar Burney had appealed to Musharraf to release Kashmir as no charges had been proved against him and he had been in jail for nearly 35 years. On the basis of this plea, he was pardoned and set free to return to India.

However, the public disclosure by Kashmir Singh that he was indeed an Indian spy sealed the fate of those Indians wishing to be freed under the same plea, say observers.

With Shah Rukh Khan lending his presence to their multimedia campaign, Force India is all set to announce its arrival in India, part-owner of the Formula One team Vijay Mallya said on Tuesday.

Force India, the first ever Formula One outfit owned by an Indian, will soon unleash a massive multimedia campaign in the country and Mallya said Shah Rukh was enthused by the idea of associating himself with the team.

“The whole idea was to spread the word that an Indian team has arrived on the Formula One grid and we wanted to evoke a sense of pride among the Indians,” Mallya told PTI from Malaysia.

“I went to Shah Rukh seeking a goodwill message and he was at once ready for it. He said ‘I’m a proud Indian and I would love to do it for an Indian F1 team.’”

Thanking the actor for agreeing to lend his name to the campaign, Mallya said, “It was very spontaneous on his part and that shows how much excited he is about it. And he did it for free.”

Mallya, a motorsport enthusiast for long, became the first Indian owner of an F1 team when he joined hands with the Mol family and bought Spyker for euro 88 million in October.

Mallya insisted on rechristening the team with the country’s name in it and International Motorsports Association (FIA) approved the changing the name of the outfit to Force India.

Shah Rukh Khan on Tuesday found himself in the centre of a controversy after a senior Cricket Board official alluded that cricket matches were being used by stars to promote films but the superstar hit back saying he does not have to depend on other’s platforms to push his films.

Khan said he was sad and disappointed over the remarks by Ratnakar Shetty that use of the platform of cricket for promoting films by stars is “slightly debatable” in the wake of his latest film Om Shanti Om coming up for discussion during a chat with TV commentator Rameez Raja at the recent Jaipur ODI cricket match between India and Pakistan.

Shetty however said film stars were welcome to watch cricket matches. BCCI Vice-President Rajiv Shukla said the Cricket Board has no objection to Khan or any other film personality coming to watch international cricket matches involving the national side.

A visibly hurt Khan said in Mumbai that “God has given me enough and I don’t crave publicity.”

“I went to watch the match for the love of sport, It is not in my nature to promote my films in others’ platforms,” he said.

“I don’t think it can be so strange that just because I am popular, I can’t take my children to watch a spectator sport without creating some kind of ill will or ill thought in the mind of people. I am very disappointed,” Khan said.

Khan wryly said, “Maybe I will just send the children next time and tell them not to say they are my children.”

Khan said he is not going to watch cricket matches in future if it has not gone well with the BCCI.

Khan said he had gone to watch the Jaipur watch for the love of the sport.

“My kids are fans of Sachin, Dhoni and Sourav,” he added.

Khan said his latest film came up during the Jaipur match proceedings when Rameez Raja said he and his family would like watch it.

So, it will be strange if film actors do not talk about films, he added.

Rajiv Shukla’s statement comes in the wake of a media report, which quoted a BCCI source saying the board officials are unhappy with King Khan as he is using cricket to promote his movies knowing that this is a “much bigger platform” than a private television station.

“The BCCI has no objection if any film star watches any of the matches involving the national team,” Shukla said.

“We do not think the players get distracted by the film stars or any other spectator,” he said.

Off-late Shah Rukh has been appearing in matches involving the Indian team. He was there to cheer the team in the final of the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa and then again went to see the Twenty20 match against Australia in Mumbai, where Deepika Padukone –his co-star in his recent movie Om Shanti Om was also present. He was present in the last ODI against Pakistan in Jaipur as well and talked about his new movie in the commentary box.

He wanted to see the Kanpur ODI as well, but the local authorities vetoed the move saying it would be difficult for them to arrange for security and control the crowd.

Cricket Troubles

The presence of the reigning superstar of Hindi film industry, ShahRukh Khan at cricket matches in recent times has attracted a lot of attention, but the organisers of the games, BCCI has not taken too kindly to SRK’s constant presence. Shah Rukh was also present at the final of the T20 World Championship and even went onto the field to congratulate the Indian team.

He was also present at the one-off T20 match between India and Australia at the Cricket Club of India (CCI). Quite a few officials are unhappy, claiming the leading man of Hindi cinema is using the platform provided by the matches to promote his latest flick, Om Shanti Om.

“This is a much bigger platform than being on a private television station. A match is watched by the entire country, there is no better way to create recall value. We have to be understand that,” said an angry official.

In particular SRK’s interview to the host broadcaster during the fifth and final ODI in Jaipur has raised the heckles. Interestingly, during the interview SRK spoke about his latest film. Board secretary Niranjan Shah refused to comment on the matter when contacted by TOI.

There has also been talk of SRK possibly buying a franchise in the soon-to-be launched Indian Premier League (IPL). But the board officials dismiss this as mere speculation

The King Khan performed for the Indian and Pakistani cricket teams yesterday (November 12) at a gala event organised by Subroto Roy Sahara of the Sahara Group, triggering speculation over whether Shahrukh Khan had taken the place of the Big B who till recently was the biggest endorser of the Sahara camp. And just where was one-time close friend and confidante Amar Singh?

Meanwhile Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh today (November 13) took jibes against the Sahara Group and also lashed out at Shahrukh Khan, reacting to the reports published in a national newspaper.

The report quoted a top executive of Sahara as saying, “Only family members and not outsiders” were allowed at the recent Sahara function in Lucknow.

An angry Amar Singh reacted today saying it was up to the media to “read between the lines” and that it was Shahrukh Khan who started the verbal duel when he made nasty comments against him at the Filmfare awards last year.

“I have read in Mumbai Mirror that the Director of Corporate Communication has said that only friends and family was invited not outsiders- if Sahara has made this statement it is for you read between the lines,” said Singh.

He went on to “put on record”, “I have don’t have anything against Shahrukh Khan. He made a comment against me in a Filmfare function. He might be a superstar and a rockstar, but I have also got some North Indian foolish supporters who reacted angrily on that. I am sorry about that. Shahrukh gave a statement that his kids had felt very bad about that – even my kids are Shahrukh fan – when they heard his statement they asked me, why Shahrukh ‘uncle’ was talking against me that way.

“Thereafter he is keeping mum, I am also keeping mum, I do not have any issue with him because he is not joining SP, and I am not going to join Bombay Film Industry.,” said Singh to TIMES NOW.

Shahrukh Khan danced the night away on Monday (November 12) at Sahara City in Lucknow – a Dawat -e-Dosti organised by the head honcho of the Sahara Group, Subroto Roy Sahara. While the evening was a gala one with celebrities from the world of sports and entertainment, it was not so much the guest list as the people excluded from it that set tongues wagging.

While Shahrukh was given superstar treatment with a private jet and a personal invite, one-time confidante of the Subroto Roy Sahara, SP leader Amar Singh and ‘Big B’ Amitabh Bachchan were conspicuous by their absence.

Though representatives of the Sahara Group have been quick to brush aside the Big B’s absence claiming he was busy – but we can’t help but wonder whether a new order is in a place – and is Shahrukh the new poster boy for the Sahara group?

TIMES NOW managed to catch up with BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla, who was also present at the gala, for his take.

“They (Sahara) are the Team India sponsors, Sahara had invited Mr Shahrukh Khan and he was gracious enough to be there,” said Shukla.

But while everyone may be doing their best to pooh-pooh the reports – it wouldn’t exacztly be a bolt out of the blue, considering rumours have been afloat for sometime now of an alleged falling-out between the Sahara family and Amar Singh and a consequent distancing from the Bachchans as well.

Well, evidently in the world of politics and entertainment, relationships rarely last forever!
