The minister was miffed with the Badshah of Bollywood, when the actor snubbed his request to curb smoking in public, saying that actors were entitled to such “creative liberty.”

The minister got back at his bete noire recently when he compared Shah Rukh with Aamir Khan saying that the former should take a leaf out of the book of people like Aamir Khan on how to use the artistic tool to improve society. The obvious reference point was Aamir’s super hit film, Taare Zameen Par which has helped the cause of dyslexic children.

It would be unfair to Shah Rukh if his work is labelled as irresponsible, just as it would amount to being extremely biased to name all of Aamir’s films as socially responsible. CT speaks to some industry watchers to find out the truth behind this argument.

If Aamir has to his credit a Taare… or even a Rang De Basanti , then Shah Rukh too has done Swades , we the people, and Chak de! India . These films had some very pronounced social messages for the youth. Sajid Khan, director of a recent entertainer Heyy Babyy , feels that there is no such thing as a socially relevant cinema. “Cinema is basically a good story told in an entertaining manner. If the story is correct and touches the audience in some manner, then it automatically becomes socially relevant. Aamir and Shah Rukh don’t do a film because it serves a social cause. Both of them try to do a good film, rest is taken care of,” says he.

Very often the perception is that Aamir is more studied in his approach towards cinema. Shah Rukh on the other hand, is perceived to be more spontaneous. If Aamir does what is right, it so happens that what Shah Rukh does becomes right. Girija Oak, the actress who played Aamir’s friend in Taare…, feels that Aamir strikes a perfect balance between the entertainment value of a film and the social message that is riding on it. “Shah Rukh Khan’s films are almost always larger-than-life and out-and-out entertainers. It would always be difficult for him to do films like Swades… and Chak De!… The fact that he has done these films and they have been big hits, is a huge achievement.”

But on the other hand, Renuka Shahane keeps us thinking on whether cinema is the only medium through which an actor can project his sense of social responsibility. The actor has known SRK since his television days when the two worked together in the serial, Circus. Saying that King Khan has become more socially responsible since the time he became a parent, she adds, “He has served the social cause in his own way. He is a great role model, because he is not only a good actor but also a good father and a faithful husband. Just because he is an actor, does not mean that he is the custodian of social responsibilities. The social relevance of his films is evident from the fact that they are such huge hits.”

The arguments for and against the two Khans can go on, yet there is little doubt that there is a certain level of responsibility required from these big stars, which they can use to promote a social cause.

Actor Gracy Singh, who was Aamir’s co-star in Lagaan , says, “Aamir is an actor with a purpose, he thinks about the masses and what strikes a right chord with them. That is the reason that his films almost always carry a social message, and at the same time are very entertaining too. In this sense, he is way ahead of others.”

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan on Saturday took a U-turn from his earlier comments on Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss who had advised him not to smoke in public saying he was impressed with the latter’s concerns about the public health.

“It is just a misinterpretation that I have snubbed the Health Minister. I am very impressed with the fact that he wants me not to smoke. Even, I too want to quit smoking in my real life (not reel life),” Khan said to the reporters in New Delhi.

The Superstar had recently said in an interview that he did not like anyone telling him what to do and what not to. “I do not endorse smoking and I do not like anyone telling me personally what to do and what not to do,” Khan said in an interview to a private news channel.

Defending smoking scenes on the screen, the actor contended that the depiction of such habits are just a part of the characters. “I want to tell on behalf of every actor, director and producer that anything negative in movies like, fighting, firing, smoking, drinking and rapes are not for their glorification, but they are a part of characters. Films can’t be all about good things or god and goddess,” he said.

The actor advocated, “There should not be a blanket ban on anything. But yes you have to be responsible about what you show in your films. And I can say with pride that with 17 years and 60 films I have been one of the most responsible actor as far as what kind of the entertainment I am giving to the country.”

SRK Trying To Quit

On rolling news channels the exploits of opening batsmen and actors scroll endlessly across the screen, no matter apparently too trivial to be reported. When Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, perhaps India’s best-loved actor, announced this week that he was thinking about stopping smoking (again) it made news bulletins.

“Pay attention to me, you will learn something,” said Shah Rukh Khan to a distracted journo in a rather heavy tone. The very next moment he started talking about how concerned he is about his son’s safety.

“Today, my son’s photograph has appeared in the paper and that concerns me about his security.” Trust the man to have enough words for all the controversies around him as well.

Smoking on screen:

Recently, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss urged Khan to desist from smoking in his films.

“I have been trying to quit smoking in personal life. But it’s different when it comes to films. In films, a rape scene, alcohol or guns are not shown to inspire anyone. It becomes the part of the creative process. I believe there should be a leeway instead of a blanket ban on smoking in films.”

“I feel blessed that Allah has given me such status and some money that I can felicitate a change in the life of some aspiring sportsmen”

Cricket fever:

Talk about IPL, and Khan gets visibly excited. Ask him if it is gamble, and he refuses bluntly.

“It is big enough money that I can loose my roti, kapda aur makan, but everything is not just business in life,” says Khan. Now the franchisee of the Kolkata team, Khan says he has left the details to the experts.

“I have followed my passion for sports. I couldn’t pursue my career in soccer because of a back problem. I feel blessed that Allah has given me such status and some money that I can felicitate a change in the life of some aspiring sportsmen. I would call it constructive aggression.”

Fresh appeal:

This year Khan will be seen in Aditya Chopra’s third directorial venture after Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Mohabattein. Tittled Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Khan will again be seen with a new comer. With last year’s Chak De India and Om Shanti Om, this will be Khan’s third film, opposite a new girl.

When asked where the Rani Mukerjis and Kajols have gone, he says, “Girls can’t handle me for long.” He adds, “Besides the director’s vision, it’s also about dates. It’s big enough for a director to have Shah Rukh Khan’s dates. With a newcomer around, the filmmaker doesn’t have to bother about the dates of any female superstar.”

Point taken Mr Khan.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan today said Indian cinema survives on creative freedom, and added that Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss’s criticism of him and Amitabh Bachchan for portraying smoking on screen is great thought, but a little issue.

“I think there is a huge amount of creative freedom that should be allowed in cinema and arts, and one should not go around picking on little things – because that’s just cinema, it’s make believe and we should not have huge censorship on that,” said Shah Rukh Khan at a ceremony where he was awarded the French title of ‘Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters’.

“I saw it in the news that Mr Ramadoss feels that Mr Bachchan and I should not be smoking on screen. I truly agree with that, I think it’s a great thought. More than that, I wish Mr Ramadoss prays that I stop smoking in real life. That’s worse – in movies we just do it for make believe.

Every time I am in front of a television channel I always say children don’t smoke, it kills you. It is the worst habit and I want to give it up as soon as possible,” he added.

Last week, Ramadoss had urged Bachchan and Khan to desist from smoking in their films. He was also critical of Khan for smoking at a cricket match.

Concerned over the impression they leave on youngsters when they smoke on silver screen, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has urged Bollywood mega stars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan to desist from smoking in their films.

“The movies are most responsible (for encouraging smoking). When I said movies should not have smoking scenes we have statistics which show that 52 per cent of children have their first puff of a cigarette because of movie celebrities,” he said.

“..I have already made appeals to Shah Rukh Khan…I would like to make an appeal to him and Amitabh Bachchan and all other personalities,” Ramadoss said in an interview to a private news channel. He was also critical of Khan for smoking at a cricket match.

Questioned on his pet theme of pictorial warnings on cigarette and bidi packets, he said, “I am sure they would be very effective. All this time we have been saying things to people. But I believe it is now time to scare them.

“In contrast to developed countries where tobacco incidence is going down, in India, it is going up frighteningly,” the minister said.

Confronted with the fact that the government had agreed to pictorial warnings 18 months ago but was yet to implement it, Ramadoss said the delay was due to “political activity and the judiciary”.

However, the government’s intention was to enforce pictorial warnings and there were no two ways on that, he added.
