After a two-year lull for celebrity world tours, the tinsel town is back in action. The first-ever Bachchan trio tour, The Unforgettable, will fetch Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek and Aishwariya together nearly Rs 60 crore from 16 performances starting from July 18 in Toronto.

Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan will alone net nearly Rs 40 crore from performing across 25 cities for the Temptations Reloaded tour that will pan out in two phases.

Bollywood stars are making double of what they earned from these tours a few years ago. The Big B of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan, commands Rs 2.5 crore, more than double of what he charged two years ago (around Rs 1 crore) a performance. In a 50-60 days’ tour, there may be around 20-25 performances.

Shah Rukh Khan is not far behind Bachchan. He rakes in around Rs 2 crore currently. Earlier, he earned around Rs 75 lakh to Rs 1 crore.

However, Khan is challenged by Akshay Kumar, who charges almost the same. The other biggies like Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan charge in the range of Rs 1.5-1.75 crore. Temptations in 2004, which spread across 43 cities has been the benchmark for bollywood tours.

However, in the years that followed, the overseas performances of Bollywood stars have witnessed a downturn. While Temptations witnessed a full house, the tour that followed in 2006, Rock Star, met with cold response with around 70 per cent occupancy even with Salman Khan, John Abraham and Shahid Kapoor performing.

“Stars who attract global audiences have not been available for tours in the last two years. Also, remuneration back then was not compelling enough for them to be willing to perform overseas over a period of 40-60 days,” said Mohammed Morain, the promoter of Cineyug Entertainment, who is organising Temptations Reloaded, in which Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Arjun Rampal and Ganesh Hedge will perform along with Shah Rukh Khan.

The Temptations Reloaded tour will be held in two phases, with the first lap rolling out on Saturday in Amsterdam. The second round will be held next year. However, women performers still make much lesser money. The only woman star who matches the men stars is Aishwariya.

The only woman star who matches the men stars is Aishwariya. She earns around Rs 1.25 crore for her stage performance currently. Earlier, she would get in between Rs 80 lakh and Rs 1 crore. Other heroines like Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu earn half of what Aishwariya does (around Rs 45-50 lakh).

Still the fee is less in case of multi-city performances since the star then signs a bulk deal.

“The performance fee varies depending on the market, the kind of performance the actor will deliver and popularity of the star at the time the tour is held. The success of a film at the box office also affects the performance fee,” said Sabbas Joseph, director, Wizcraft International Entertainment, organisers of The Unforgettable, which will showcase Akshay Kumar, Madhuri Dixit, Preity Zinta and Riteish Deshmukh in addition to the Bachchans.

Meanwhile, industry players are now looking to adopt the Hollywood model, whereby a star is paid a minimum guarantee amount and has a revenue-sharing agreement. Show organisers earn not only from ticket sales, but also from television telecast rights, mobile rights and merchandising.

The challenge, however, organisers face is from television channels, which pay humongous amounts to celebrities either to play host on a show or be a judge, says industry sources. Sources said now with celebrity shows not garnering eyeballs, the focus will shift to tours.

Only two Indian cricketers – M S Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar – figure in a list of the 10 most visible celebrities featuring in TV ads. There are no other sportspersons in the list.

And while Shah Rukh Khan may be the undisputed badshah of Bollywood, he’s been pipped in this particular race by Chhote Nawab Saif Ali Khan.

According to the AdEx Survey, prepared by TAM Media Research, TV ads featuring Saif Ali Khan appeared for as many as 45 lakh seconds through 2007. SRK followed with 42 lakh seconds, while Amitabh Bachchan was third with 32 lakh.

Hrithik Roshan may not be seen too often on the silver screen these days, but he’s highly visible in ads, coming in fourth with 31 lakh seconds.

Kajol – another star whose movies are few and far between – was fifth overall and the highest-ranked woman with 22 lakh seconds. Dhoni followed close behind at No. 6, ahead of Tendulkar.

Preity Zinta, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Juhi Chawla rounded off the top 10. With 13.2 lakh seconds, Chawla was ahead of reigning box-office draws like Priyanka Chopra (11 lakh seconds), Bipasha Basu (6.4 lakh) and Kareena Kapoor (6 lakh).

However, SRK and the Big B continue to endorse the largest number of brands. In 2006, Bachchan endorsed 41 brands, SRK had 35. But in 2007, the tables were turned: King Khan endorsed 39 brands with 21 advertisers while Bachchan was brand ambassador for 36 brands with 20 advertisers.

In terms of visibility, Dhoni, Sachin and Dravid (8 lakh seconds) were well ahead of other Indian sportspersons, including Yuvraj Singh (6 lakh) and Irfan Pathan (4 lakh). The highest-ranked non-cricketing sports star was N Karthikeyan (1.5 lakh seconds).
Interestingly, small screen actors fared quite well too. TV star Hussain, with 8.85 lakh seconds, came in ahead of Bollywood hunks Akshay Kumar (8.7 lakh) and Salman Khan (2 lakh),while female stars like Mona ‘Jassi’ Singh (3.4 lakh) and Smriti

‘Tulsi’ Irani (3.35 lakh) made their mark as well.

While Amitabh Bachchan’s Unforgettables tour – which will also have Abhiash, Preity Zinta, Riteish Deshmukh, Madhuri Dixit and Akshay Kumar – kickstarts on July 18 in Toronto, Shah Rukh has decided to begin his own Temptations Reloaded tour on June 21 at Amsterdam.

This means the rivalry between the two most powerful Bollywood stars will now go global and with big stars from the industry joining either side, it is now to be seen which tour is able to garner more popularity.

Confirms Mohomed Morani about SRK’s show, “Yes we are starting off from Amsterdam on June 21. In the first show, SRK, Arjun Rampal, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Ganesh Hedge will perform.”

And which countries are on their itinerary? Morani reveals, “The Amsterdam show will be the curtain raiser for us. A few months later, we will go for the jugular, touring all parts of the world. The media will be informed of dates, stars and venues then.” Sources say that a promo of the show has already been shot at SRK’s bungalow, Mannat. It has Shah Rukh saying, “The wait is over, I am coming to your city.”

The buzz about rivalry between the stars started after Shah Rukh stepped in as the host on Kaun Banega Crorepati and did the remake of Big B’s ’70 hit, Don. Will the two coinciding world tours add more grist to the rumour mills?

A lot of Bollywood stars graced the occasion, but the ones who stole the limelight were the Bachchans. Amitabh and Abhishek walked in with the pretty Bachchan bahu, Aishwarya. According to sources, while the Bachchans were enjoying the performances, King Khan walked in.

At that point, the trio had got up to leave and were on their way out, but they were blocked by Shah Rukh Khan.

The Bollywood Badshah greeted Big B and Abhishek with a warm hug and cordial handshake. After the formal greetings, SRK proceeded backstage for his performance with Deepika Padukone and Shreyas Talpade.

Unfortunately, the Bachchan trio could not stay to watch his performance. The policemen and their families were fully entertained, though. That little scene between the Bachchans and the Khan, was paisa vasool and more. It brought the sparkle to their Diwali.
